Our Mission
Our mission is to provide quality native plants that are healthy, hardy and waterwise. We promote the use of Montana native plants in natural and ornamental landscapes and we are committed to preserving native plants species in Montana and the Rocky Mountain West.
Who We Are
Blackfoot Native Plants is a family owned and operated nursery that was established in response to our interest in and dedication to the preservation of native plants. As active members of the Montana Native Plant Society and the Montana Nursery and Landscape Association we strive to promote the use and cultivation of native plants.
Our work with the Montana Weed Control Association, the Blackfoot Challenge and the University of Montana Native Garden further our efforts to educate the public and provide plants to local communities.
What We Do
We propagate and cultivate an ever-increasing diversity of native plant species each year at our nursery. Over 200 species are grown annually with new species being added each year. If you don’t see what you are looking for, ask!
Wholesale prices are offered to nurseries, government agencies and restoration companies, or those ordering over 100 plants. Retail sales are through the Missoula Farmer’s Market.
We provide consultations to landowners in the Missoula area and we conduct educational workshops on native plants in conjunction with local agencies and nurseries.
Since the digging of wild plants can seriously deplete and destroy local plant populations, we hand collect our seed, primarily in our locale, or propagate from cuttings of local plants. We do not collect wild plants.
What is a Native Plant?
At Blackfoot Native Plants we grow only “native” plant species. These are plants indigenous to North America prior to European settlement.
Why Grow Native Plants?
Our mission is to preserve native plant species that provide food and shelter for our animal and insect species, are adapted to their environment, require minimal maintenance and water once established, and maintain the natural beauty of Montana’s landscape. See our Plant Descriptions for information on specific plants. Because of our plant choices, growing practices (most plants spend a winter out-of-doors) and location, our plants are hardy at high altitudes, many thrive in clay soils, and most withstand drought. They are often the perfect choice for difficult landscaping sites.
